Alex Miller

Alex Miller: Cycling passion key to his success

Growing up on a farm in Namibia, 22-year-old pro cyclist Alex Miller is no stranger to bikes. And while he only started taking the sport seriously in 2017, this relative youngster has a burning desire to excel.

While he considers the physical aspects of the sport such as training, eating healthily, and getting enough sleep as critical, it’s on the mental side where he shows experience beyond his years. To this end, he focuses his mind on the physical pain his body is going to experience on race day and doesn’t try and psych himself up too much. It comes down to trusting the race routine, eating the right things, and even doing something completely different like reading a book or watching a movie just to clear his head and not stress about an event unnecessarily.

Of course, he loves the competitive aspect of racing and knowing that the other cyclists are the biggest obstacle. But as soon as the race is done, he enjoys having a coffee with his competitors or simply going for a ride together to enjoy the camaraderie.

This year, Alex will be focusing on doing well at the Cape Epic in March, while also pursuing his goal of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Long-term, he’d love to move to Spain and race professionally there.

Considering he went to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and won the bronze medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, we’d say he’s well on his way to realising his dreams.

He considers it a great honour to be part of the King Price Xtreme team, as it enables him to do the sport professionally. He also likes the fact that the team consists of athletes across different sporting disciplines.

His piece of advice for someone looking to enter the high-paced world of professional cycling?

‘You should do it because you enjoy doing it. Getting on your bike and participating in competitions all over the world is part of the excitement of it all. When you race professionally, you get a strong sense of achievement and enjoyment from it. It’s 1 of the best feelings in the world.’
